Cape Town mayor to attend Congress |
|
The Mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille, will attend the opening ceremony of Congress 2008.
Zille worked for many years as a journalist on The Rand Daily Mail, the liberal newspaper that was eventually squeezed out of existence by the apartheid government and its commercial owners. She was subsequently Public Relations Officer for the University of Cape Town.
One of the mayor’s most notable achievements at the Daily Mail was her reporting on the death in detention of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko, and the inquest into his death. She was also a member of the Executive Committee for the Western Cape responsible for education, and was active in peace activities during the last years before democracy in 1994.
About 300 communicators expected to attend the Congress will have an opportunity to network and share ideas with local leaders for their professional development.
