Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
Archbishop Tutu addressed the Congress participants in the opening ceremonies of WACC’s Peace Congress today. In addition to sharing reflections on South Africa’s progress from apartheid to democracy, he expressed regret that South Africa has recently reacted xenophobically to foreigners within her boarders after South African refugees received so much help from other African nations during its struggles. He thanked the global community, saying “We are free today because you supported us. Our victory is your victory. Our freedom in many ways is your freedom,” and “We are called peacemakers, not peace lovers.”
With his delightful humour and grace, Archbishop Tutu “waved his magic wand” to change the audience into South Africaners to applaud the global community for their solidarity in the struggle. He commended WACC for its efforts towards creating a Global Centre for Communication Rights. Tutu shared the history of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and its link to people’s God-given right to the freedom of creation. In the incarnation of The Word, God’s creation is linked to the end, the “God Project” to bind us all together in the human family.
