Joanne Sandler, Deputy Executive Director - Program, United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
Following the appointment of Noeleen Heyzer, former Executive Director of UNIFEM, to a new post in Bangkok, Thailand, WACC is delighted to announce that Joanne Sandler, UNIFEM's Deputy Executive Director - Program, will replace her as keynote speaker at its upcoming global communications conference, Congress 2008, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, October 6-10. She will be giving a presentation on Media and gender justice.
Sandler has continued to guide UNIFEM’s efforts to implement rights-based, results-based programmes in support of women’s empowerment and rights in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. She has worked with international organizations and women’s groups worldwide for the past 25 years, with a focus on organizational development, strategic planning and economic justice. She has also served on the Board of Directors of a number of international and domestic organizations, including the Association for Women's Rights in Development, Gender at Work, and Women Make Movies
Marcelo Rezende Guimarães, Brazilian priest
Marcelo Rezende Guimarães, a Brazilian priest, will address the theme of “New communication and information technologies”. The author of A New World Is Possible, published by WACC, serves as an adviser to peace projects and is a member of Amnesty International.
Ruth Ojiambo Ochieng, communication rights advocate from Uganda
Ruth Ojiambo Ochieng , an internationally-recognized Ugandan advocate for communication rights will address the theme Power, conflict, and peace: Telling the story.Ochiengis known for her extensive research and for her work with women in armed conflict situations in the global south.
Doreen Spence, indigenous woman from Cree Nation in northern Canada
Doreen Spence , an indigenous woman from a Cree community in northern Canada, serves as a human rights advocate for indigenous peoples worldwide through her work with international organizations such as the United Nations and the Permanent Forum for Indigenous Peoples.
In her presentation to Congress, Spence will address the theme “Communication Rights” in examining the role of the media in building peaceful, viable communities.
