Amy Goodman to receive Communication for Peace Award PDF Print

Toronto, Canada, 20 August 2008

WACC has announced that investigative journalist Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, a daily TV/radio news show airing on more than 700 stations worldwide, is to receive its Communication for Peace Award. The ceremony will take place at WACC’s international conference ‘Communication is peace: Building viable communities’ in Cape Town, South Africa, 6-10 October 2008.

Amy Goodman draws her inspiration from independent thinkers, artists, activists, journalists and alternative media around the world those who challenge the powers that be. In Static, she writes: ‘Every day, Democracy Now! breaks the sound barrier by broadcasting a rich, dissenting, diverse range of voices. This includes the powerful and the grassroots, the banned, the celebrated, the despised, marginalized and ignored. These are the voices of people fighting to make the world a better, more humane, just, peaceful, and more compassionate place.’

Protect journalists against violations of press freedom PDF Print

Tutu shocked by human rights violations in Gaza strip PDF Print

Jerusalem, 9 June (ENI) - After Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, visited the Gaza strip recently, he called what was happening there a "gross violation of human rights" and noted that peace can only come when enemies sit down and talk. "True security and peace will not come from the barrel of a gun," Tutu said, exhorting both sides to knuckle down and talk as the only way to bring about peace.

WACC to honour three leading communicators at Congress 2008 PDF Print
WACC will confer honorary life membership on three highly-respected international communicators at its global communication conference, Congress 2008, scheduled to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in October.  

In announcing the 2008 honorees on behalf of the Board of Directors, the General Secretary, Randy Naylor said, “Each of these three individuals has made an outstanding contribution to the cause of communication rights in careers of service to the church, academia, and international institutions.
