Cape Town, South Africa: Over 270 media specialists and peace activists from around the world with gather in Cape Town from 6-10 October for WACC's Congress 2008 on the theme: “Communication is Peace - Building Viable Communities.” |

The opening plenary session at the Life Church in Main Road, Sea Point, starting at 9.00am local time on Monday 6 October, will be addressed by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and the Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Helen Zille.

Other plenary keynote speakers will be Ms Joanne Sandler, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations’ UNIFEM Programme; Marcelo Rezende Guimaraes, a Brazilian priest; Ms Doreen Spence, an indigenous women’s leader from Canada; and Ruth Ojiambo Ochieng, Executive Director of the Women’s International Cross Cultural Exchange.
Daily workshop sessions will explore, among other topics: communication rights; media and gender justice; information technologies and peace.
Ecumenical News International, the news service of the World Council of Churches will be conducting a workshop on “Writing for Peace”.
The Congress ends on Friday 10th, when renowned peace activist and broadcaster Amy Goodman will be honoured with WACC’s “Communication for Peace Award”.
WACC has been in existence for over sixty years, with over 1 000 corporate and personal members in both the religious and secular worlds.
